Established in 1990, UPTECWA Local 8 is a democratic, member-operated union made of more than 11,000 technical and professional employees of the University of California. It is an affiliated of University Professional and Technical Employees Communication Workers of America Local 9119. It works in collaboration with other unions, faculty and student groups to influence UC policy and to inform the media and state legislature about UC employee s issues. The union represents employees who face unfair layoffs and performance evaluations and disciplinary actions. Its members include the technical, research, health care professional, research associates, computer resource specialists, clinical lab technicians, editors, student affairs officers, social workers and writers. UPTECWA Local 8 is located in Irvine, Calif.
