Dr. Montes grew up in Spokane, Washington. He served in the U.S. Army from 1987 – 1991 and was awarded the National Defense Service Ribbon and the U.S. Army Meritorious Service Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster). Upon completion of his military service, he majored in biology and chemistry at California State University-Fresno. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from University of the Pacific, San Francisco, in 2000. He completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at University Hospital, Fresno. He then completed three years of additional specialty training in Oral, Head and Neck Oncology; Microvascular Head and Neck Reconstruction; and Pediatric Craniofacial Surgery. Prior to joining the faculty at Indiana University School of Dentistry, where he served a Clinical Assistant Professor and the Residency Program Director; he was the Chairman of Maxillofacial/Head and Neck Surgery at Sanford Health in Fargo, North Dakota. He has served as a Board Examiner for oral surgery and a Specialty Site Visitor for residency and fellowship training certification. He has published several book chapters and is recognized for his landmark publications in oral and maxillofacial oncology. In his capacity as an educator, he has presented nationally and internationally. Dr. Montes is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Montes enjoys woodworking and restoration of his 1862 farmhouse. Dr. Montes has three daughters: Hannah, Emma, and Isabella.
