Covenant Community Church was chartered in 1994 to provide an ecumenical Christian Church affiliated with the International Council of Community Churches (Frankfort, Illinois) and the Church Federation of Indianapolis. Covenant's original 17 "Convenors" believe the providence of God's Love in Jesus Christ gave the inspiration through which they organized.

The first ten years found Covenant developing a nurturing environment of "Care Partners."  From 1994-1998, Bishop James Tyson and his congregation at Christ Church Apostolic lent facilities to the original seventeen "organizers of Covenant Community Church" and their growing numbers. By July 1998, Covenant Community Church was settled into its newly constructed home at 5640 Cooper Road on the northwest side of Indianapolis.

Pastor, Rev. Dr. Landrum E. Shields, with a life-time interest in extending his values of "love" and "respect" for all faiths led Covenant Community Church to reach out in interest with Christians of other communions.  Covenant Community Church care partners are exposed to CUIC (Churches Uniting in Christ), IPCUM (Indiana Partners for Christian Unity and Mission), National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA and other ecumenical efforts. As a former Presbyterian Church (USA), Dr. Shields has also been active in Whitewater Valley Presbytery activities.

Rev. Dr. Shields serves on the Board of Church World Service representing the International Council of Community Churches.
