I had my first baby at Catawba Valley Medical Center. I used the midwives of Catawba Valley. It was the absolute worst experiance I have ever had. I will never refer anyone to these midwives. The hospital staff was wonderful and the nurses at the hospital were wonderful, but I would advise anyone who is pregnant to not see these midwives. I have since had a second baby and delivered at another hospital with a different midwife team and had a wonderful experience. You are probably wondering why I do not recommend Catawba Midwives here is why: I was in labor for 17 hours at home. I was scared to death because I had never been in labor before and didn't know what was going on. I was soo tired and worn out from the 17 hours of laboring at home that I called the midwife on call to tell her my contractions were getting harder and I felt I needed to come in. My contractions never got regular and even during delivery were sporatic. They would be 4 minutes apart them 7 minutes apart then 3 minutes then 5 minutes. They never got regular even as I was pushing out my baby. The midwife on call assumed that since they weren't regular that I need not come in (I had a 40 minute drive to the hospital). I told her I was in bad pain and really thought it was near time. As I am crying and having contractions while on the phone with her she then yells at me. Yes yells at me while I am in labor with my first child and scared to death as it is. She yells at me and says, "I am not talking to you over the phone about medicine, I am not going to come to the hospital and check you now and have to send you back home and then me have to come back again at 3:00 am to check you again!" Anyway I told my husband to take me to the hospital even though it was against her wishes. When I arrived I was 5 cm dilated. If I hadn't left then I would never had arrived early enough to get my Strep B IV and fluids for an epideural. I was very glad I had not waited longer to pacify her. As soon as I get there they give me my IVs and then a little later my epideural. I push for one hour and my baby doesn't come out. The midwife decides she needs to leave to catch a flight for her trip to another state. Then my husband and I realize why she was so mad that we came in to deliver. She had a flight to catch and a vacation to go on. So she LEAVES me there baby crowned for an hour and a half until another midwife can come in. So this lady comes in and I push for another 3 and a half hours because my baby is stuck. He had moved his arm up I suppose during the hour and half I was laying there with him crowned. So since the baby never comes out this midwife lowers the top of the hospital bed so my head is lower than my feet and has me come up and do a sit up every ime I have a contraction. Yes my abs were killing me after doing that for hours. Lets just say I was in labor 27 hours. In total it took 4 and half hours of pushing to birth my child. My second baby who was delivered in a different part of the state and was birthed with much better midwives. No woman should ever be left laying in labor , baby crowned for an hour and a half so someone can go on vacation!!!! She shouldn't have been the midwife on call that night if she was going on vacation that night. I thank God myself and baby survived their care.
