Back in 2010 I had outpatient elbow surgery at Baptist Hospital. I woke up to find that one of my front teeth was broken out. I had to guess that it was caused by being intubated. To perform this procedure, they use what is called a laryngoscope. This is a metal tool (basically its a crow bar) designed to properly insert the breathing tube. I'm not sure what the hurry was as this wasn't an emergency procedure, it was elective. I can only assume the doc was in a hurry as he obviously didn't use the proper care in cramming the crow bar down my throat and using my front teeth as leverage. I have had MANY procedures (before and after that one) in which I was put under and have NEVER had a problem. I know that in the other procedures I was also intubated in the same manner. I was never given an explanation nor even an apology. In fact, I never even saw the doc in the recovery room afterwards. My tooth was placed on my chest in a baggie in the recovery room. After the fact, I explained to the billing folks that it had cost me over $1000 to have this tooth fixed and would they please help offset my cost by crediting back the $235 deductible. I didn't ask that the entire amount of my dental bill be reimbursed as I was trying to be reasonable, stuff happens, I get it. The answer was no and then they proceeded to send it to a collections company which recently put it on my credit report. She was actually quite nasty about it and explained that it was a risk. Yeah, thanks. Risks in any situation do not absolve someone of helping to pay (a small fraction of what it cost me) for a mistake or of negligence. The name of this group of doctors is METROPOLITAN ANESTHESIA ALLIANCE and they DON'T CARE. Let me also tell you that whomever they have managing their practice is a MORON. No sympathy, no help, no adjustment, just her unfriendly crap about "risk." I have reluctantly paid the bill and hope to have it off of my credit report soon. I will post this message in MANY places.
