Working for a grocery wholesaler, Bill Moran identified an opportunity for small grocers to compete against emerging mega stores. He opened a single Save-A-Lot store in 1977, which has grown into one of the leading U.S. grocery chains, operating more than 1,150 stores in urban, rural and suburban areas. The stores offer a range of Save-A-Lot-brand products, as well as farm-fresh fruits and vegetables, beef, pork, poultry, dairy products and nonfood items. It also offers a selection of merchandise, including housewares and hardware. Save-A-Lot sells products of several brands, such as Totino s, Banquet, Michelina, Wylwood, McDaniel and Kurtz. The company supports various children's welfare organizations and programs. It also designs and implements recognized programs for educating associates about federal support plans. Additionally, it partners with the United Way and other national organizations. Save-A-Lot operates a location in Gainesboro, Tenn. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of SUPERVALU, a Fortune 100 company and one of the largest grocery retailing companies in the United States.

custom service or lack of it

I've shopped at this Save Alot store for over 15 years and in the last couple weeks I have never seen such terrible custom service. I guess it's the store's policy or maybe it's the cashier's policy not put your groceries in the cart after they finish bagging the items. It's not enough that some of them try to put 10 can goods in a flimsy plastic bag, then if you ask them to double bag it, the look that you get back really tells you just how they feel about putting the plastic bag in another plastic bag---I say, come home with me and carry the groceries from the car to the house and let's just see how far you can carry them before the bag breaks and everything spills out--but wait....that's right... YOU DON'T CARE!!!! It's just a job and we're just another person in line. But now they don't want to make the effort to put your groceries in the cart, I guess the next surprise will be I get to check and bag my own groceries, put them in the cart, carry them outside, put them in the car and return the cart--I don't think so. I can go to Kroger's where they are happy to get my business, bag the groceries, have someone take them out to my car, put them in the car and take the cart back to the store. I know what it's like to work at a grocery store, when I was in high school I worked in one. It's not a very glamorus job, but it's a job and the effort that you put towards the job will be noticed by someone one day and that could lead to a better job. But I think that some of the cashier's that work at this store will never get anywhere and they only have themselves to blame. I think from now on I'll be shopping at the Save Alot store in Cookeville. The people are nicer and the cashier will put the bags of groceries in your cart.
