Lighthouse for the Blind of Fort Worth is a nonprofit organization committed to helping legally and totally blind individuals become more self-sufficient. Founded in 1935 by a blind woman named Willie Fay Lewis, the company offers services, such as skills assessment, orientation and mobility training, community services, senior services, vocational training and employment opportunities. Lighthouse s services are divided into two operations at its 80,000-square-foot facility. Its industrial division employs approximately 70 visually impaired individuals who manufacture products, such as energy dissipation pads, computer paper, foam-cushion shipping containers and ballpoint pens under contract to federal and state governments. This division is largely sustained through sales of products and services and provides sustained wage-earning employment to working-age blind individuals. The company s community service and rehabilitation division provides support services for nearly 1,000 visually impaired individuals in the Fort Worth, Texas, area annually.
