Communities In Schools, based in Fort Worth, Texas, is a community-based stay-in-school network, helping young people stay in school, learn, and prepare for life by connecting needed community resources with young people in schools. The reasons for dropping-out may include issues, such as poverty, low self-esteem, alcohol and drug abuse, gang involvement, family conflict, abuse, neglect, teen pregnancy, teen parenting, violence, victimization, low educational expectations, poor health and homelessness. The CIS program is part of a national network of more than 130 programs in over 30 states. The CIS program is a nonprofit, charitable organization governed by a local board of directors. The organization meets the needs of students and their families, including emotional and health concerns, academic tutoring and mentoring from adult volunteers, cultural enrichment, parent involvement activities, career exploration and college access programs.
