California Steel Industries was established in 1984 after the closure of Kaiser Steel's facilities. The need to establish a West Coast steel source in the United States brought together two of the world's biggest participants in the steel industry: Japan's JFE Steel Corporation and Brazil's Companhia Vale do Rio Doce. California Steel has more than tripled its output and shipments since the first coils were rolled and shipped in 1984. The steel company is the leading producer of flat rolled steel in the Western United States, producing the widest range of flat rolled steel products in the region. It is the only West Coast steel supplier manufacturing five different product lines: hot rolled, pickled and oiled, galvanized, and cold rolled sheet, and electric resistance welded pipe. Unlike integrated steel mills or mini-mills, California Steel does not manufacture steel. Rather, it processes steel slab purchased from suppliers around the world. The mill ships more than 1.8 million tons of coil, sheet, and pipe products, representing sales of more than $690 million. California Steel is located approximately 50 miles east of Los Angeles serving the Western United States market. 50 percent of the flat-rolled steel in this region is consumed in the southern California, Las Vegas and Phoenix areas.
