Simmons started the company in 1965, when he saw a need for an efficient and low cost alternative to manual killing. Lacy designed and produced the first automatic poultry killing machine in 1966 and revolutionized the way poultry was slaughtered. When the industry was in the need of an efficient method of anesthetizing the bird, Simmons again came through, with the most effective stunning machine in production, even to this day. Simmons again made great strides in the automation of the poultry industry, with the introduction of the gizzard harvester and followed it up by a full line of automated processing machines, from killers to bird washers.
