Patients who experience complex high risk surgery or are expected to heal slowly are often managed with a wound drain. Current drain output monitoring practices are manual - nurses (in the hospital) and patients (at home) eyeball the color and volume. Inaccurate data means drains are usually installed longer than necessary and nurses and patients miss early onset of complications (infection, leaks, excessive bleeding, blockages). This results in longer lengths of stay and increased readmission rates. Medsix plans to sell a disposable sensor with predictive analytics that can be attached to any wound drain to automate monitoring. This will address the needs of patients (detect complications earlier; remove drains earlier; reduce overall recovery time), providers (improved clinical workflow and decision making; creating a standard for wound drain output) and payers (reduce length of stay; reduce readmission rates; increase reimbursements).
