Tom Ballard, OD and his surgeo...

Tom Ballard, OD gave me a price quote for "Custom LASIK" during my initial exam. He later decided with the surgeon, Larry R. Taub, MD to that I would receive "conventional LASIK". They performed the first surgery using conventional LASIK software without informing me and without my consent. When I reported this to the Texas Optometry Board, Tom Ballard, OD side stepped answering this claim. Upon requesting a copy of the price quote I was given, First Eye Care Dallas sent me an unsigned written response stating "There is no document in your record in regard to a price quote. Additionally, all LASIK procedures were priced equally with no differentiation for Custom LASIK". They probably gave the same quote to all potential patients, knowing not all would receive Custom LASIK.

Tom Ballard, OD and his surgeon Larry Robert Taub, MD are responsible for permanently damaging my vision. They lied to me and did not inform of the risks of LASIK, and how they were increased based on my degree of myopia and large pupil size prior to having the surgeries. My vision has now been permanently damaged, and is not correctable as it was prior to the surgeries. Prior to the surgeries I wore $10/pair disposable soft contact lenses and had absolutely no issues with my vision. After two surgeries that I was never a good candidate for, I now rely on the use of expensive hybrid lenses. I have even been quoted $3,500 - $5,000 to fit me with a pair of special contact lenses to help correct my vision. I have seen more than 12 different optometrists or ophthalmologists while attempting to have my vision corrected after these surgeries. Providing anything less than 100% honesty and transparency when discussing an elective procedure such as LASIK should be considered criminal.

The co-management approach used by First Eye Care Dallas splits responsibility for your care between so many people that when you run into issues it is very difficult for anyone to be held responsible. Do not let an optometrist at this facility give you the consent forms or discuss the risks with you, as they can lie to you and will not be held responsible by the Texas Optometry Board as this is beyond their scope of practice and therefore they are not ultimately responsible, the surgeon is. My first contact with the surgeon, Dr. Taub, was just prior to the surgery after I had already been given the Valium. During the few minutes I spoke with Dr. Taub prior to the surgery I asked him if it would be safe for me to continue participating in boxing after the surgery and he said “Yes”. Of the more than one dozen optometrists and ophthalmologists I have spoken with since the first surgery, Dr. Ballard and Dr. Taub are the only two doctors who said it was safe for me to continue boxing. All other doctors have advised against it. While they will present the co-managed treatment as a team approach, it is truly nothing more than a business arrangement based on convenience as the surgeon Dr. Larry R. Taub has a practice (Newman & Taub Vision Center) less than a mile up the road.

Ask Dr. Ballard about the long term risks of LASIK and what could happen if you get a minor cornea scratch after having LASIK. Ask their surgeon Dr. Taub why he chooses to wear contact lenses instead of having the surgery that he is more than willing to perform on everyone else.

I have filed complaints with the Texas Medical Board, Texas Optometry Board, and the BBB regarding their actions and will be filing additional complaints in the future. I received a copy of the letter Dr. Ballard submitted in response to my complaint to the Optometry Board and it was full of lies. Please don't fall victim to doctors at this facility. Your eyes a much too important. The surgeries performed at this facility put an end to many of my hobbies and destroyed my quality of life. I recommend steering clear of this business, its doctors, and anyone associated with them.

So disrespectful and rude... I...

So disrespectful and rude... I will never go back or refer anyone!!!! I went there on 2/4/12 to pick up some glasses that I'd ordered weeks before. After entering, I approached the receptionist to gv her my name and let her know that I was pickn up my glasses. She told me there were 2 ppl ahead of me... Ok cool. Well, after sittn there for abt 20 mins 4 other groups of ppl walked in... and they didn't sign in just started looking at frames. After they'd been in the office for abt 5 min, they were helped right away... one lady was asked to have a seat at the desk to have measurements taken, two other ladies were directed to go to some area in the back, and a lady and her daugther were walked to the room where glasses are kept... the daugther was given her glasses out of this room while standing at the doorway waitn for the doc?? to find her pair. After seeing all of this, I approached the secretary!! and complained. She then called to the back, and let the dude know that I shld've bn helped next. While he was still helpn those that arrived after me, he finally approached me and told me "just a minute". Now aware that I'd been there before others, he continued to help those others while I sat for abt 5 more mins... becoming more and more po'ed!! Feeln totally disrespected I left w/o getting my glasses, because someone was abt to get cursed out.

I go there, sign in, and wait in an orderly fashion... get treated like I don't matter as a customer. Others walked in and don't sign in, but they're in and out w/i 10 mins and/or have doc's?? attention w/i 5 mins. Oh, I fell to mention that my husband and I were the only black ppl there and I'm not one to play the race card... I just call it like I see it!! At First Eye Care at 635 and Preston Rd, the use of intergrity, respect, and excellent or even average customer service doesn't apply to all!!!
