Fascinating and tasty

My favorite Ethiopian restaurants are the places that are one part eatery, one part community center (complete with things like satellite TV channels from Ethiopia), so that you can get a sense of Ethiopian culture and of life in the local community.

(In other words, not very Americanized, and occasionally a bit unpolished about the edges.)

The first time I went to Habesha, the server informed me which dishes were available that night, since there wasn't a printed menu (!). I promptly ordered the excellent veggie combo, which boasted a larger than usual number of selections, including multiple takes on hot and mild lentils, gomen, potatoes, salad, and a red vegetable mix that's reminiscent of beets.

I've also had a mildly spiced lamb dish (with a wat-type flavor, though not the heat) at Habesha, which was quite good.

Habesha is in the location once occupied by Fasika, near North Park mall and the big Half-Price Books just east of 75. Shadybrook is only a few blocks long, so I'd recommend getting an online map before you head out.
