Never send a parent to the skilled nursing rehab floor. Though the PT and OT may be acceptable, the doc/Director of Nursing do not know how to well manage Congestive Heart Failure. Mom had a 5 day stay in Baylor and was transferred to AL to get stronger before returning home. She arrived with CHF well-managed and was brought into distress in less than a week. The nursing staff and director repeatedly ignored family concerns of swelling and shortness of breath. She was not seen by their doc for a week! Then after being treated by her for another week, excused herself from the case. We even brought this to the attention of the Executive Director. We tried to help educate the staff, gave mom's internist and cardiologist phone numbers. Our elders deserve better care! Mom's internist is part of the Palliative Care Team at Baylor and witnessed first-hand how mismanaged her CHF was. My greatest hope is that docs talk among themselves. Even when touring, we were told Baylor docs worked their so her electronic records of all her Baylor docs could be viewed. Either the Director of Marketing lied or was ignorant..neither case is acceptable. One nurse was great, one aide was great, as well as the therapists, folks doing laundry, med techs. Medical oversight and care was harmful--a clear failure.
