There are many different definitions of aging, some with negative connotation and some with more optimistic outlooks. From the medical standpoint there is pathologic aging that is essentially an illness that manifests as accelerating loss of function with each succeeding decade.

Pathologic aging often presents with decreased energy, increased body fat, decreased mental clarity and emotional vitality. In its later stages it is commonly recognized by increased blood pressure, diabetes and cancer.

Pathologic aging is associated with hormonal decline which in turn is associated with increase in risk of cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, dementia and many other illnesses. Causes of declining hormone levels are many. Stress, diet, environment, medications and insufficient physical activity are all contributing factors.
