Dr. Schmitt is an OB/GYN, specializing in obstetrics and minimally invasive gynecological surgery. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She graduated with honors from University of New England, College Of Osteopathic Medicine in 2009, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and in 2010 with a Master of Public Health.{line break}Dr. Schmitt is originally from Massachusetts and received her training in Portland, Maine. Dr. Schmitt was a health volunteer for over 2 years in the Peace Corps in Togo, Africa after college which became the most influential pieces of her life that directed her into healthcare. She knew she wanted to practice obstetrics because she enjoyed being a part of such an important and special part of a woman and family’s life and wanted to be able to provide care in those special moments.{line break}As a 3rd year medical student, she worked with a physician in New York who had a wonderful community practice where realized how much she loved the spectrum of care for women of all ages. She developed a passion for operating as well during her years of training, and knew she wanted to be immersed in a community and provide care for women. Dr. Schmitt feels it’s so important to live in the community where she practices because it is critical for women to have care, close to home.{line break}Dr. Schmitt completed her residence in Shiprock, New Mexico and worked there for 4 years. She is passionate about caring for underserved populations. Through her travel around the world, she developed a special appreciation for meeting new people, learning about different cultures and having new experiences. She has been a part of mission trips to Peru where she did gynecological surgery and was able to travel back to Togo to reconnect with the community and see familiar faces.{line break}In her free time, she and her husband love to travel and have visited Indonesia and Israel. She enjoys running, yoga and skiing and is looking forward to ski season. Together they have a new baby boy, Liam, who was born earlier in 2017.{line break}Dr. Schmitt is accepting new OB and gynecology patients at Southwest Medical Group, Market Street.{line break}About OB/GYN{line break}Obstetrics is all healthcare related to women that are pregnant. Prenatal, birthing plans, post partum care. OB’s can take care of higher risk moms. Gynecology is all women’s health not related to pregnancy.
