Sometime last week, I arrived at 1st Source Servall hoping to replace a faulty AC capacitor, and possibly a fan motor. When I walked into the store, I said,

“Good morning.”

The two “gentlemen” bilaterally placed on either side of the service counter did nothing to show that my presence was recognized by them. So I said again with more emphasis,

“Good morning. Anybody?”

The shorter man (the spectacled, balding one), turned to the other older employee, and asked,

“Are you punched in?”

With the flattest, driest anti-enthusiasm, and the deadest eyes he could muster, the Older Guy asked me,

“What do you need…”

::Cut to my inner monologue at this very moment::

Is this really happening?

Is this how they treat ALL their customers?

How are they still in business?

Maybe I should build a time-machine, rewind a few seconds, walk out the door, and re-enter this establishment again for a “do-over”.

::End of inner monologue, and back to my narrative::

If I hadn’t needed those air conditioner parts so badly and if I didn‘t love my wife so much, that CERTAINLY would have made me walk out of there at that point.

With the same shark-stare and lifeless voice, Old Guy continued,

“We don’t have that part here. We don’t really like to sell these parts (retail) to consumers. You might try Johnstone on Agnes.”

By the time I asked him for directions, my feet were already walking ME out of the store.

::Cut back to my inner monologue upon my departure::

These guys are severely unhappy with their CHOSEN professions.

Why do they work for the public if they hate people?

NEVER again…ever.

::Back again to my narrative::

I was taken aback by this customer service nightmare, because in previous Saturday visits to this store, a tall, energetic, personable employee (forgive me for not recalling his name) got me in and out of the store with the most jovial attitude, as if he were happy to have MY business. On this particularly early morning , he even apologized to me for not having the point of sale machine/register set up for the day when I walked in.

After purchasing my much needed capacitor at Johnstone (the other service parts location in my city, and a TERRIFIC customer service experience, I might add), I asked the friendly employee about their business hours. Much to my chagrin, he reported that they are closed on weekends, which are my only available days to scratch items off of my domestic, “honey-do” list.

As we all know, manmade components are subject to intermittent failures from time to time. If ever I am in the market for appliance parts again, I would rather take a vacation day off to go to Johnstone, than to wait till the weekend to deal with that rude pair again. The only way I’ll EVER give 1st Source Servall (formerly known as Standard Appliance) my business again, is if I see the aforementioned tall, friendly employee standing at the service desk.

If all three men are working on a Saturday, and I am next in line to be helped by the Rude Brothers, I will gladly let the next person in line take my spot. I’ll wait for Tall, Friendly Guy, thank you very much.

Needing a lid switch for my Whirlpool washing machine, I went to the YP.com website to find appliance parts stores in Corpus Christi. The only one listed is 1st Source Servall Appliance Parts. At their site was a link to their website. I went to their website, inserted the part number I needed and it showed they had it in stock for $23.89.

On June 29, 2015 I went to the store to purchase the switch even though at $23.89 it was priced over three times higher than eBay prices. (No one wants to be without their washing machine while waiting for a part to be shipped.) 1st Source Servall Appliance Parts did have the part in stock but told me I had to pay an additional $8.95 shipping.

That increased the price of the part to $32.84 plus sales tax. That made the part five times what it cost on eBay.

It made absolutely no sense to me that they would charge me shipping when the part was on their shelf. Also, on their website it did not state that there was no local pickups and/or that local pickups would be charged an additional shipping charge.

I refused to pay such an outrageous price for the part and I left empty handed.

This was not my first disappointing experience with this business. They routinely over-charge for parts knowing that most people are willing to pay it because getting their appliance back up and running is critical. This was certainly the last time I'll enter their doors.

Unfortunately for all of us, 1st Source Servall Appliance Parts is the only appliance parts store in town. Your options are either let them rip you off or be willing to have your part shipped and wait a few days for it.

Also, don't let 1st Source Servall Appliance Parts tell you that their prices are based on "quality" OEM parts. Their OEM appliance parts are the same made in China or Mexico junk as the after-market parts. The OEM parts are made on the same assembly line with the same inferior materials as the after-market parts.

Sorry that I don't have a better solution for you consumers but 1st Source Servall Appliance Parts is a good example of what happens in the absence of competition in the market place and of how the USA has become a throw-away society.

Terrible customer service. They hung up on me several times and refused to help me. The staff was rude and did not care to help me. I called 7 times and never once did they say well come to the store by 1 pm cause we will be closing instead they strung me along till they closed and refused to help me. I will never use them. They refused to even look for my part with the number because he claimed I was giving him wrong number, but how would be know if he didn't even search his system. He just told me it shouldn't have letters. He should have at least searched or tried, but he refused. Never call here they are unhelpful, rude and waste your time.
