Would not recommend renting with Cooper. First of all, the apartment was a dump to begin with.

The door to the outside of our apartment does not lock so anyone can get into the building- just not into our actual apartment. Either way, I don't like it.

Next, WE HAVE BUGS! We have called maintenance to have the bugs taken care of TWICE and though they responded quickly, it seems like the amount of bugs we get just increases.

We have one window that opens, but it doesn't lock so we have to hold it shut with a wooden pole.

You cannot open the closet door without it falling off... every single time... in every single bedroom.

The shower ALWAYS GETS MOLDY no matter what you do to try to prevent it. It's just a damp, disgusting apartment.
The place is a nightmare. I can't wait to move out.

UPDATE: After I posted my review was posted things have improved here. There is a locking front door now, although it has large gaps on either side that let in a flood of cold air. Two noteworthy instances I have been impressed with Cooper Properties: 1. I locked myself out of my apartment, and the maintenance guy was there to let me in within 20 minutes (on a Saturday morning!) This was extremely helpful. 2. There was water leaking through the ceiling and again, a response was made very quickly- this time within the hour I think. The maintenance guy resolved the issue efficiently. So perhaps all of the inconvenience I experienced for the first two months of renting with Cooper Properties is not a reflection of the competency as a whole.

I have never written a review before, but I was compelled to do so because of my extremely disappointing and frustrating experience with Garth/Cooper Properties so far. They are unorganized in a big way and not at all professional in demeanor. They have little concern for their tenants' comfort and safety (although they will assure you otherwise). They take FOREVER to address major maintenance issues. I mean FOREVER like months and months. Let me just give you a synopsis of my experience so far so that you know what you are in for when you sign a lease:

-At the lease signing I was not given a copy of the lease

-I was given the wrong keys to the building and my unit and thus was locked out when I tried to move in (maintenance guy brought me the key)

-I was never given a key to the back door of the building and still cannot enter/exit from the back (where the parking is)

-Garth was unable to tell me who the energy provider was for the property, and then he guessed that it was AEP

-I call AEP to try to set up my electric bill and they have no record of the property

-My electric is shut off because it is provided by the City of Columbus. (got that taken care of right away when I finally figured it out on my own)

-The gas had been shut off by the maintenance guy. Only the gas company should ever do that.

-I was told there would be central AC when I moved in and there wasn't. Two months in they decide to install it and one day without any warning I come home from work to a house literally covered in sawdust. All of my clothes, books, couch, bed...everything covered in sawdust.

-There were no working lights in the hallways or the outside for the first three months.

-Garth decided that the building needed a new door and that project has been half-finished for about two months. There is a large pile of trash from that project sitting as decor in the front yard.

-At the lease signing I was not given a copy of the lease

-I was given the wrong keys to the building and my unit and thus was locked out when I tried to move in (maintenance guy brought me the key)

-the key opens only the top lock on my door and twice I have been locked out because the maintenance guy comes in to do something and locks the bottom one. I asked right away that this issue be fixed and it hasn't been. I was never given a key to the back door of the building and still cannot enter/exit from the back (where the parking is)

-Garth was unable to tell me who the energy provider was for the property, and then he guessed that it was AEP

This list just covers what I can think of off the top of my head.... One last thing that happened this week: Garth finally decided to put new locks on the front and back doors of the building and DIDN'T GIVE ME A KEY OR EVEN NOTIFY ME...and so I came back at midnight on a Saturday and was locked out of my home. I was alone and it was dark. Fortunately I had left a window unlocked and so I climbed in. This was the event that really prompted me to write this review.

I wouldn't rent with them if I were you.

I don't even know where to beg...

I don't even know where to begin... I cannot wait to move out of my apartment. Cooper Properties is unorganized, unreliable, and unprofessional. Garth should not be a landlord to say the least; he just shows up, ignores e-mails/calls, never received a copy of the lease even after asking him 5-6 times, wanted to show our apartment only gave us a 3 hour notification, water meter was broken for 8 months then told us we had to pay this extreme amount when it was his own fault, last but not least everything breaks and will not be fixed for months. I'd rather be living in a box than to have Garth from Cooper Properties as my landlord.
