Not What It Seems

Not familiar with this center, but nephew went through program in Maryland--expect they are all similar. So called "above grade level" achievement not exactly accurate in the real world. The experience and maturity level of a child has an impact on his current operating status. In other words, a child who can read all the words in a Grisham novel may not comprehend its plot.

Kumon makes lots of promises but no there is seldom any consistent meaningful individual attention when needed because of time limits. Parents looking for quick fixes or miracles should consider closer association with public/private schools or tutors vs. this "self instruction" via seatwork/busywork. Kids often struggle through levels of worksheets but get little or no one on one assistance--instead they are rerouted through the same work until "mastery" is achieved. Likely works well for average, above average, or gifted self motivated kids who will learn in any setting. Parents beware--not suitable for LD, ED, or reluctant learners. Too many kids in centers at the same time so that instrutors do not have time to help because they are correcting homework/classwork. The busier the center, the less help is available. Look for centers that schedule learning appointments and demand parental/home support. Don't fall for the sales pitch: remember this is a business looking for clients (concerned parents with income, children, and Type-A agendas). This is not a bad thing, but--BUYER BEWARE!...

Math program is better than reading because math is a logical progression of measurable skills with right/wrong answers. Reading is more interpretational and requires much more instruction, interaction, and practice. Reading skills can be refined through worksheet practice, but cannot be LEARNED/UNDERSTOOD without interaction with a mentor/teacher. This is especially true in the readiness and early learning stages, and Kumon centers do not provide adequate instruction/reinforcement (too many students to teacher ratio).

Parents think about this: were your kids were put on this earth to augment your ego or social standing? Why, exactly, are you investing in this program?
