Celebrating its 100th anniversary, Bolton Pratt Co is one of the region's oldest general contractors and construction managers. The company was founded in 1907 by Karl Pratt and Tom Bolton, with Walter Sutliff Sr. joining the firm soon afterward. Ownership transferred to Walter Sutliff Jr. in 1952. He served as president, with other partners involved, until 1982, when control and ownership transferred to the next generation, Walter Sutliff III and David S. Smik. Sutliff, like so many sons in construction, had been involved with the family business starting in high school and coming on board full time, after getting his degree in metallurgical engineering from Lafayette College.Similarly, Smik joined the company in 1973, immediately after graduating from Arizona State University with a degree in construction engineering and management. He started off in estimating and whatever else was needed of him. Essentially, he started on the ground floor and worked his way up.It's interesting that for both Sutliff and Smik, their entire professional careers have been with Bolton Pratt.Sutliff III and Smik currently serve as President and Vice President respectively. Together they represent over 70 years of construction experience. This longevity and stability is just one factor in cementing Bolton Pratt's reputation for quality and excellence. As Northeast Ohio developed, Bolton Pratt evolved from industrial and schools to financial, hospitals, retail and office build-outs, to today's high-tech environments.
