Christopher House's mission is to help children, families and individuals in need help themselves through integrated social, educational and human service programs. The First Presbyterian Church of Evanston founded Christopher House as part of the settlement house movement in November 1905 on Chicago's north side. Church members opened the doors to serve people in need, specifically new immigrants. Initial programming consisted of religious services and classes and social lectures. Quickly, offerings grew to include a sewing school, day care, music lessons, a library, sports programs and showering facilities. Christopher House is a nonsectarian six-site family resource center located on the north and west sides of Chicago. Its current programming includes early childhood and youth development, teen parent support, parent enrichment, counseling, literacy and emergency services. Together with the community, it continues to help people in need help themselves.
