HORRIBLE FACILITY

We had our father placed at Belvedere Nursing Home. Prior to the placement we were given a GUIDED tour by the director. In retrospect now we know why it was GUIDED. Our father sustained a massive stroke. After being placed at Belvedere, numerous incidents occurred. First, when we went to the facility to see our father, they could not find him. After numerous room searches, they located him in a wing that they thought contained no patients. He was brought there the night before and now this was 10 am. Who checked on him??? WE SHOULD HAVE SEARCHED FOR ANOTHER FACILITY IMMEDIATELY. We were grieving and stressed emotionally because of his recent stroke and foolishly allowed him to stay. We arrived every morning. several mornings we found him naked, full of feces up to his face. He could not talk, walk, eat, etc... Once he was wedged between the bed and the wall a/c unit. Several times, trays of food were in front of him, on one occasion hot coffee. He was a food choke hazard patient ergo, he had a peg-tube (feeding tube). He had usage of one arm and did not comprehend what he was doing. He was not to have food at all, only liquid nourishment through his tube. The last incident was when we arrived as usual every day of his stay, his bed alarm was sounding. We could hear it when we approached his room which was a short distance from the nurses station. He had fallen out of bed. As we cradled him in our arms (we could not lift him) waiting for a aide to come and see why the alarm had sounded (which took 25 minutes). How long had the alarm been sounding before we arrived? Once again i went to the directors office and stated our concerns. He responded that they were busy. We immediately hired a nurse and had our father taken home. OUR FATHER SPENT 10 HORRIFIC DAYS AT BELVEDERE. All of these incidents occurred within 10 days and we spent hours a day by his side. The staff had full knowledge of our daily routine of coming every morning and spending the majority of the day there and this still occurred. We asked if we could sleep over but the request was denied. We wanted to do this to assure our fathers safety. As we looked around at the other patients the neglect was obvious. At the time we concidered hiring an attorney but were too consumed with assuring our fathers safety and finding a way to take him home. Please check out every aspect of this facility. DO NOT GO ON A GUIDED TOUR. In retrospect, this was a staged showing. How could a FACILITY be SO NEGLECTFUL in such a short time (from day 1 till 10)? Usually, looking at a facility is under stress from some situation that recently arose. Now that our father has passed we feel an urgent need to let people BEWARE OF BELVEDERE. STAY CLEAR OF THIS FACILITY. We have since been visited numerous nursing homes to see if there are any signs of neglect to patients. The majority of the facilities are wonderful. One major regret is that we did not speak up for the NEGLECTED PATIENTS we saw at Belvedere. Granted a few did seem to fair well but the majority showed signs of neglect. These are harsh words but truthful words. Our fellow human beings deserve better.
