Building a pool for Scott & Michelle Guice was no cakewalk for Pool by Design either. A hard, stressful process.

I offered more than once to cancel the contract & let him have someone else complete the job but they refused & I was obliged to complete all I had committed to. I am still not paid in full. Any money collection for progressive payments was difficult with this customer. We contracted to remove & replace a pool already at the house. Mr. & Mrs. Guice were not happy with the company that originally built their pool. That company would no longer talk to the Guices & after they were threatened with a law suit from the Guices it became confrontational.

Eventually, Mr. Guice got involved with the county building department. My job was stopped by the county, I had a small compliance issue which I resolved. The county reviewed all the Guices property, There were multiply serious infractions ( none of which we were in any way involved in ) it cost Mr. Guice a small fortune to bring his house & dock up to required standards. This, in my opinion, is the true reason that Mr Guice is so upset. He had a plane that backfired. I do not believe Mr & Mrs. Guice ever intended to fulfill their part of our mutual written contract by paying us.

However, Mr Guice has a beautiful pool with travertine decks, hot tub with waterfall, & approved by the county for all standards & codes. We managed to create an absolutely stunning work of art for our customer to enjoy for a lifetime only to not be paid in the end. If this isn’t a testament to our patience, quality, and perseverance to do the job ‘right’, I don’t know what is. I have not heard from him in over a year for any warranty so the pool is operating well. The pool is an asset to his property.

I am the owner of Pool by design. I am trying to respond to the review from Richard M ( Manship). He was offended when I did not want his business. I choose my customers, he did not make the cut. I think his biggest problem is a beer budget with champagne tastes.

Building a pool with Pool by Design was ABSOLUTELY the worst construction experience I have ever had. I have built 3 homes, 2 commercial offices, and 3 swimming pools. Unless you enjoy being berated and belittled, I cannot recommend Pool by Design. When building a pool, remember that once the hole is dug in the ground, you are stuck with the company until the end. Ricky, the construction superintendent, was rarely on the job site, provided little supervision and failed to deliver on promises that he verbally made. Whenever there was an issue, he would blame Simon, the rude Englishman and owner, for any problems or breakdown in communication. Simon would blame Ricky for any “miscommunications”. If you choose to work with this company, anything and everything must be in writing. When approaching the end of the nightmare construction experience, the plumbing that connected our original equipment to the new pool was cracked. I had to hire my own plumber to fix the problem because Simon said it was not their fault. At this point, the pool had not passed the final building inspection so I asked Simon what Mecklenburg County would think about this issue. He said, “The only thing the county cares about is if the pool holds water.” If you choose Pool by Design, this is the type of quality craftsmanship you can expect.

It amazes me that people like this can operate a business. If your business does not rely on repeat customers, you can treat the customer any way you choose. Unfortunately for our sake, we did not have the forewarning about Pool by Design.
