We hired contractors for a six-month renovation, a conversion of a single family townhouse to two-family residence. They brought their own architect on the job Mark McCarthy, who works for Salvati. Eight months into the job the contractors were fired for numerous reasons, but the Mr. McCarthy assured us it would not affect his work. He was different, he said.

Yet eight months after the contractors were fired, we still had no gas meter for the 2nd apartment, and there was no end in sight for getting the permits approved. We were losing money every month in loss of rental income. We hired an expediter to find out what problems there were with the buildings dept. and resolve them, and the architect texted me saying “Please don’t have anyone looking at my work.” The expediter reported there were wrong permits, permits not filled out properly, required inspections that were not conducted, inaccurate architectural plans and, much to our shock, my forged signature on many permit applications, which is a felony offense. Salvati was sent a certified letter regarding the forgeries, and asked about a refund. He never responded.

Salvati was terminated. We then reported them to NY State Board of Professions, and filed in Small Claims court to recover our deposit on account. A second architect reviewed the drawings, the permits, and compared our house to the drawings, and declined the job saying it was too much of a mess for him to take on. We have now hired a third architect to re-file all permits, create new and accurate drawings, and start over. This, almost a year after the original deadline has passed.

In September 2012 we appeared in Brooklyn Small Claims Court. Mr. Anthony Salvati introduced Mark McCarthy, who had been the only person in his office involved with my job, as his “chief architect.” Mr. McCarthy identified himself as a “practicing architect.” We later discovered that Mr. McCarthy was not licensed, and has never been licensed, as an architect in New York State. They are currently under investigation by the NY State Board of Professions.
