The Federal Emergency Management Agency, also known as FEMA, is a part of the Department of Homeland Security. The agency reduces the loss of life and property and protects the United States from hazards, including natural disasters, terrorist acts and other man-made disasters. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., it has more than 2,500 full-time employees. In addition, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has over 4,000 standby disaster assistance employees who are available for deployment after disasters. The agency works in partnership with the American Red Cross, as well as state and local emergency management and federal agencies. It additionally operates an office of equal rights that serves the agency and nation by promoting affirmative employment. The Federal Emergency Management Agency maintains an office of national capital region coordination that oversees and coordinates federal programs. The agency maintains a location in Bothell, Wash.
