Established in 1927, Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of mental health and wellness through advocacy, education, prevention, referral and other services. Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier, a part of United Way, is affiliated with the New York State Mental Health Association. The organization operates an advocacy program that is designed to protect the rights of individuals dealing with the effects of mental illness. It also operates the Compeer program that trains volunteers and matches them with Compeer participants who are receiving mental health services. In addition, the organization s Cultural Diversity Program assists people of diverse groups in accessing mental health services. Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier is located in Binghamton, N.Y.
