Established in 1973, the Burton Fire District provides fire suppression and prevention and emergency medical services. The district serves more than 25,000 residents in the unincorporated areas of Port Royal Island in Beaufort County in South Carolina. It operates more than four fire stations and a fleet of engines, pumpers, jet skis and tankers. The department performs fire safety inspections in various buildings. The Burton Fire District also offers hazardous material mitigation services and handles urban search and rescue operations. It provides public education for the safety of citizens and visitors. The department additionally offers training programs for the professional development of employees.
