Dr. Syed Hussain is a cardiothoracic surgeon at Southside Heart & Lung/Northwell Health, and Associate Professor of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He joined Northwell in 2017 to help launch Long Island's first heart transplant program at Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital at North Shore University Hospital. Dr. Hussain came to Northwell with over 16 years of experience in adult cardiac surgery, last 10 of which were at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Hussain performs a wide range of adult cardiac surgical procedures. They include CABG, complex re-operative heart surgery, minimally invasive aortic and mitral valve repair/replacement, surgery for ascending, arch and thoraco-abdominal aneurysms, surgery for infective endocarditis, heart failure surgery which includes heart transplant, left-ventricular assist devices (LVAD), and ECMO. Over the last decade, Dr. Hussain has been involved with nearly 300 heart transplants. 'I am involved from very beginning of a heart transplant; from the moment I stop donor heart until we implant it in our patient and the new heart starts to beat again,' he says. 'It's an amazing feeling every time!'Dr. Hussain knew he wanted to be a heart surgeon ever since he watched a heart transplant on TV as a child. 'All throughout school I was driven by that one passion,' he says. 'With heart surgery and heart transplants, there is so much intense human emotion involved. I strive to be the person who patients and families can trust to guide them, and take care of them every step of the way through such a stressful time with compassion.' Dr. Hussain completed his medical school, general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery residency from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India's premier medical institution. After completing advanced fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Hussain was appointed member of the professional staff at the Cleveland Clinic in 2009.In addition to clinical practice in cardiothoracic surgery and heart transplantation, Dr. Hussain is passionate about clinical research and education. He has been involved in many clinical research trials and has published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers in leading scientific journals. He has written many book chapters and presented more than 60 lectures and presentations in national and international meetings. He was a core writing committee member for 2016 American Association for Thoracic Surgery Clinical Guidelines for Surgical Treatment of Infective Endocarditis, a set of guidelines that is now used worldwide.'When I see patients get better, and know that I've been helpful to them and made a difference in their lives, that feels amazing, Dr. Hussain says. That's what motivates me every day.' At the end of the day, though, Dr. Hussain's biggest passion is spending time with his wife and two young children.
