Government Employees Federal Credit Union (GEFCU) is Austin's oldest credit union. Formed in 1931 by postal employees and originally named Federal Employees Credit Union, it is also one of the oldest financial institutions based in Austin that remains independent and locally owned. Rates, dividends, lending policies, and other business matters are regularly decided upon by an elected, local, all-volunteer Board of Directors. GEFCU offers services such as low rate loans, low fixed rate credit cards, free notarization, money orders, wire services, night depository, mobile application, free home banking, remote check deposit and more. The National Credit Union Administration insures members accounts up to $250,000 providing deposit protection backed by the United States Government.
