Established in 1909, the Bureau of Economic Geology is one of the oldest research units at The University of Texas at Austin. The agency provides research and advice services for issues related to energy and environment. It has expertise in the areas of economics, nanotechnology, mineral resources, environmental systems and geologic mapping. The Bureau of Economic Geology offers hands-on research programs for postdoctorates and undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, the agency publishes research results in a range of scientific journals. It also conducts basic and applied researches related to oil, energy, natural gas and carbon sequestration. The Bureau of Economic Geology maintains a library that houses more than 1 million volumes of books. The agency operates the Austin Core Research Center, which stocks over 2 million boxes of geologic materials.
