He received his medical degree from the University of Iowa in 1977, followed by an internship and residency at the university, then a fellowship in spine surgery at New Addenbrooks Hospital in Cambridge, England. He is a member of numerous professional groups, and enjoys tennis, biking, and spending time with friends.
