Used to be real good. Now it's only real trendy just like everyone that works there. This place has seriously become the Chili's of sushi restaurants. Good luck with that.

Ignore what it looks like, just close your eyes and EAT!

Okay, so as you've probably heard, this place is in a sketchy gas station mini-mall. If I didn't know the real deal, I'd never go in. The thing is, the owner is a hell of a guy. He eats there and so does his family. If you're going there for the first time, try to memorize the faces of the staff. NO MATTER WHEN YOU GO BACK, THOSE WILL BE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE THERE. If these people aren't all family of the owner, they must be best friends, because they're all working 12 hour shifts. I've been here for early lunch and late dinner on all sorts of days and nearly always have the same waitress. They actually seem to remember me -- on at least one occasion the waitress brought me my favorite beer without me even asking. We both laughed about it and she offered to take it back if I didn't want it, but of course I did. The reason I stress the owner and his family eating here and the staff never changing (I'll bet you they're all personally connected to the owner) is because the fish is fresh as can be. I lived in NYC and LA and I've visited Japan half a dozen times. I speak a weak Japanese and am married to a Japanese woman. I eat sushi roughly twice a week. I am, in short, the most discerning sushi critic one can find in America. For variety and quality, this place would be top-notch in NYC or Los Angeles. Uchi on Lamar is just overhyped because the environment is pretty. The very essence of sushi is experiencing the FOOD in its purest form -- so, like I said, close your eyes and EAT!
