Disappointment

Our mother had a stroke and we had to find a rehabilitation facility for her in a short time. Our research led us to believe that the Emory Hospital facilities were the best for stroke patients. The ER was impressive so we assumed the other facilities came up to the same standards. They have great marketing which can lead you to believe they have everything needed for recovery. SURPRISE! Budd Terrace (a skilled nursing care facility) at Wesley Woods Center was a large disappointment to our family and to our mother. The staff of nurses are fantastic and seem to be the ones holding that place together. The one doctor over this large facility had immediately dismissed our mother as not able to recover and we should be prepared for her to remain severly impared. This seemed to set the tone for her rehabilitation therapy as well. After only 8 weeks, the therapists were ready to claim that she was not showing significant progress, was uncooperative and they were ready to put her out. Our impression of the staff there is one of workers collecting a paycheck and just doing what needs to be done to get the job over. Don't ask for anything more or you get the "it's not my job, but we'll get someone to do it" ...and it can get forgotten. We could not get detailed progress reports from the therapists when asked nor a copy of the reports sent to Medicare until they were ready to put her out of the program. Our family members had to take shifts to be there every day just to make sure she got taken care of. I fear for patients that have family out of town and can't be there more often. We finally found a better facility and were fortunate to get our mother out of that place when we observed her emotionally showing signs of giving up. She is doing so much better now in her new facility. She is happier and showing great progress with her rehabilitation which shows she can. Bottom line for our family, is the quality of the people and their belief of the rehabilitative quality of the patient that is more important. No place is perfect, but Budd Terrace needs to improve their patient, family relations, proper detailed reports, and cleanliness in the rooms and bathrooms.
