I want to share my family's experiences with two different hospice programs in Atlanta, who we enlisted help from for our father who was suffering from serious Alzheimer's and inability to walk on his own. First i will state that we had a wonderful man who attended impeccably to him twenty four/seven out of love and devotion to him for three years. Weinstein Hospice came on the scene and the nurse insisted on examining my father without R by his side, which led to my father being very agitated. So much so that R had to come in and hold him down (which felt horrible to both of them!) while the nurse examined dad. When she walked out of the room, R said this was invasive and stripped Dad of dignity and he didn't like that. The nurse said, "This did not have to do with dignity." R's mother was there and felt like hitting her. She did not but she was sure to tell us. Weinstein Hospice came back the next day and again examined Dad, this time the nurse had him standing up. She witnessed what she believed was new bed sores on his back, which then Hospice called my family and told us that R was doing a terrible job. Their story was that in 24 hours, Dad got horrible bed sores in R's care and that we needed to either fire R and keep their services and if we did not agree to doing that, they would not work for us and help Dad. The choice was clear. Of course we were not going to fire R, who was Dad's most entrusted friend and soul kin, who kept him alive, in great care. R was obviously our blessing every day for years. We fired Weinstein Hospice. We had heard great things about them but they were the opposite for us. Matter of fact, I went to Dad's immediately after the call to inspect these sores they believed were new bedsores, to discover that these markings on Dad's body were from a time he slid on the bed in the middle of the night. He had them for a while and they were actually scabbing over. They were not bedsores. They were not new. And they were not a result of any poor care on R's part. They so happened to not check his back the day before so they hadn't noticed the marks, so they believed they were new. Shame on Weinstein Hospice for their wrong assessments, their invasive visits, and arrogant and wrong judgement calls and how bad this exchange felt to my family in need.
