Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are trained to diagnose and treat various conditions, which occur not only in the mouth but also in the structures of the head and neck region. They may correct congenital and acquired deformities of the jaws, be involved in the repair of lacerations and fractures of the facial bones, treat the Temporomandibular Joint, or TMJ, as well as treat cysts and tumors of the jaws. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons may also perform surgery that will make dentures fit more comfortably and function properly including the placement of dental implants.
