The Open Space Division, a part of the City of Albuquerque in New Mexico, maintains more than 28,000 acres of land in and around the city. Its services include conservation of natural and archaeological resources, providing places for recreation and defining the edges of urban environment. The division s areas are patrolled by the Albuquerque Police Department by foot, vehicles, horses and mountain bicycles. The Open Space Division also provides reservation areas for organizing family reunions, office picnics, club meetings and wedding receptions. Its facilities also include trails, picnic areas and a fishing pier. The division s areas also serve as natural outdoor laboratories for educational and research purposes for schools, universities and other institutions.
