I really liked my counselor, but when I found out I owed $1200 for 3 visits, I canceled all further appointments. Before I started counseling, I asked the scheduler, the appointment desk, the intake counselor and my counselor what the fees were. None of them knew, none of them referred me to the financial coordinator. Since this is a facility for the community and has a sliding fee base, I thought I would be able to afford it. I was referred to this place by providers at San Luis Valley Health as the most affordable option. My counselor noticed the fees when I tried to make a 4th appointment and sent me to the financial person. She said my insurance would cover 80% of the cost, so I would only owe 20%. I cannot afford $80 a session either. A psychiatrist in Denver in private practice only charges $250 an hour, so $400 is ridiculous! Is this why our health care costs are so high? Is this why many people don't seek or get the help they need? I won't be able to afford counseling now.
