Thomas Kinney, MD, is a board-certified interventional radiologist whose clinical expertise is managing the care of individuals with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), a potentially serious disorder of the blood vessels. HHT, also known as Osler Weber Rendu disease, can cause recurrent nosebleeds (epistaxis), red spots on face or hands, bleeding in the digestive track and increased risk of stroke. Complications from HHT can also impair normal circulation in the lungs. Dr. Kinney sees individuals with confirmed HHT as well as those who have clinical signs of HHT but may have been previously misdiagnosed. Because HHT is a hereditary disease, once he confirms that a patient has HHT, he often sees the patients family members, as well. Since 2008, he has been director of UC San Diego Healths HHT clinic, which offers comprehensive, coordinated care for HHT patients and their families and is the regions only HHT Center of Excellence, recognized by the HHT Foundation. Prior to joining UC San Diego Health in 1994, he was in private practice in New York. He completed fellowship training in interventional radiology and residency training in diagnostic radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He earned his medical degree from UC San Diego School of Medicine. He also holds a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University. Dr. Kinney is certified in diagnostic radiology and vascular and interventional radiology.
