Nunzio Bottini, MD, PhD, is a rheumatologist who treats a variety of musculoskeletal diseases and autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma. Dr. Bottini has been with the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego since 2013. He is also a biomedical scientist, with interest in finding new biomarkers and therapeutic targets for arthritis and autoimmunity. His research focuses on the control of intracellular signaling by protein phosphorylation, with particular interest in a family of proteins called tyrosine phosphatases. From 2009-2016, Dr. Bottini served on faculty at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology.Dr. Bottini completed a fellowship in rheumatology at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He earned his MD and PhD from the University of Rome Tor Vergata, where he also completed his internship and residency. Dr. Bottini completed his postdoctoral research training at Sanford Burnham Institute (now Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute).
