Established in 1954, the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) is a public utility which owns, operates, and maintains the St. Louis region’s public sewer systems, which consists of wastewater, storm water, and combined collection sewers, pumping stations, and wastewater treatment facilities. In addition, MSD provides a variety of other services, including wastewater and storm water sewer maintenance, floodwater control, monitoring of industrial waste, issuance of pretreatment discharge permits, engineering design and specification, construction of sewer lines, plan review and approvals, issuance of connection permits, public education and customer service. MSD's service area now encompasses approximately 525 square miles, including all 62 square miles of the City, and 462 square miles (approximately 90%) of the County. The current population served by MSD is approximately 1.3 million.
