During the 2005/2006 school year, the district served the educational needs of nearly 271,000 students. It also serves more than 113,000 adult students and approximately 41,000 exceptional student education children, nearly 31,000 with special needs and 10,000 gifted students. The district covers nearly 140 elementary schools, more than 40 middle schools, 30 high schools, nearly 20 adult/vocational centers and approximately 40 charter schools.
